By Vonnie Zepeda, CCA Board Member and Fall Festival General Manager

The 2021 Carson Fall Festival is supported by a grant from the Taos Community Foundation. The CCA is pleased and grateful to acknowledge this support.

We are in need of popup shades, tables, and chairs for the event. If you can help with these, contact Vonnie at cca@carsonnm.org, or see Vonnie at the Carson Cafe & Store.

Carson’s Fall Festival is upon us: October 10, from 11–4pm. Put it in your calendar today and come along and join in the fun and festivities. This event is a way for the CCA to raise some funds for its regular activities, and to give us some leeway to start implementing our priorities. It also provides a rare occasion for all of us to meet new neighbors and to rekindle old friendships.

There will be a silent auction throughout the event for two one-night stays in the Ra Paulette-created Liz’s Cave in Embudo, and a one-night stay at the Blake Hotel at Taos Ski Valley, and winners will be announced at 4pm. Periodically, we’ll draw for raffle prizes (listed below), valued at more than $2000.

For the duration, from 11am to 4pm, there will be a large range of other activities and booths.

Test your skills

There will be fun and games and contests to test your skills. Time to brush up on your horseshoe throwing, archery, crosscut sawing, and sack racing among others.

Buy stuff

At the booths you can buy freshly baked goods, and some local crafts from artisans selling items such as quilts, art, and local wares.

Exhibits / activities

Learn about the Veterans Off Grid program and buy stuff from their greenhouse. You can learn about yoga, and have a tarot reading. The Carson Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting a car wash.

Kids too!

Bring your kids and let them have fun in the Kids’ Corner, with supervised face painting, pumpkin carving, junior horseshoe throwing, and junior sack races.

Music

You can enjoy live music from the stage. Starting at 11am Roving Desert Review is the opening act, followed by Green Oaks from 1pm for the rest of the event. Raffle  drawing and activity announcements will take place when the musicians take a break.

Food

There will be all kinds of food for all tastes, including vegan options: vegan, salmon and regular burgers, sausages, brats, hot dogs, smoked drumsticks, lamb, pulled pork, apple dumplings  and more, in addition to a bakesale. Beer, sodas, and margaritas will be sold by Carson Cafe. In addition, the cafe will also offer pizzas and calzones (including vegan options). Note: Alcohol must be consumed within a designated area not extending beyond the cafe deck and patio.

Don’t miss the silent auction and raffle! More prizes being added daily.

Silent auction

We have three prizes up for silent auction:

A one-night stay at Blake Hotel Taos Ski Valley, valued at $560

Two prizes of a one-night stay in a Ra Paulette Cave, in Embudo, named Liz’s Cave, each valued at $300

Bids for all three prizes will start at $100, with minimum $10 increments.

Ra Paulette Liz’s Cave

About Ra Paulette Liz’s Cave

Ra Paulette is a New Mexico-based artist who has carved cathedral-like halls underground for years using only a pick and wheelbarrow. Many of Ra Paulette’s caves are on private property, including Liz’s Cave which he built for Liz and Shel Neymark, in Embudo.

Liz’s Cave is the only Ra Paulette cave built as a living space and the only one that has running water and electricity. It features skylights and windows that fill the space with warm, bright light, built-in drums, beautiful carvings, bed platforms excavated into walls, a lofted bedroom and a bathroom with a sunken tub tiled by ceramicist Shel Neymark.

Paulette was the subject of a 2013 Oscar-nominated documentary, CaveDigger. Filmmaker Jeffrey Karoff says, “Paulette’s spectacular, Gaudi-like caves are easily on par with the most well-known land artists — Goldsworthy, Smithson, De Maria… The fact that the cave is underground, and you feel the Earth around you, yet the sun is pouring in. Those are the juxtapositions of the two metaphors of our life. The within and the without. It’s a perceptual trick that brings out deep, expansive emotionality.”
